ALCATRAZ ISLAND

On June 30 - July 1, 2001, members of the San Francisco Bay Chapter Sierra Singles and the Loma Prieta Sierra Singles had the once-in-a-lifetime experience of spending the night on Alcatraz Island. In 2000 George submitted an entry to the US Park Service lottery, and Sierra Singles was one of 20 organizations selected, out of 250 entries, to spend an evening on the island in the upcoming year.

Thirty-three Sierra Singles members were given an after hours, behind-the scenes tour of the the island and former penitentiary and a sleep-over in Cell Block D in exchange for an hour of facilities maintenance work and a group fee of approximately $1,100.

During our stay on the island, our guide, Park Ranger Lori Brosnan, gave us a lecture on hand-made prison knives (shivs), showed us areas that are closed to the public such as the morgue and hospital (where many scenes from the movie "The Rock" were filmed), and gave us free reign of the facilities.

It was quite an experience to walk through the quiet cell blocks by one's self in the early morning.

This video is 6 minutes long. The actual time is one hour later than the time shown on the video image.
